Detail design, drawing, and estimation of cycle lane in Ring Road

Globalization and modernization are unavoidable phenomena that have engulfed the traditional town of Kathmandu valley. The rapid increase of automobiles in the city core has induced many urban problems like increased traffic congestion, increased air, and noise pollution, as well as adverse effect on the health of the residents.

Time and again, it has been visually observed that increasing road width to accommodate more private vehicles is not going to increase mobility, at least not in the long run. However, promoting cycling helps create safer, vibrant, cleaner, and healthy cities which is especially true for compact cities like Lalitpur. Especially important is the fact that the narrow streets of old settlements of Kathmandu and Lalitpur look better without environmental and sound pollution from motorized vehicles.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The main objective of the project is to prepare a detailed design, drawing, and estimate of the cycle lane in ring road stretch from Balkhu to Koteshwor to make Lalitpur Metropolitan city a cycling-friendly metropolitan area, and help make cycling popular in Kathmandu Valley again.
Some of the specific objectives of the project include:

  1. To study the existing condition of the mobility of the ring road
  2. To investigate the existing physical infrastructures like bus stops, footpaths, overhead bridges, etc.
  3. Prepare detailed design and drawing of cycle lanes in intersections and bus stops for  the promotion of safe cycling culture in the city.
