World Car Free Day

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Niharika Mathema, an Architect, Place Maker, and Urban Rejuvenator from Digo Bikas Institute, for delivering an insightful presentation on “World Car-Free Day” to the students of Classes 8, 9, and 10 at St. Xavier’s School, Jawalakhel. This session, organized in collaboration with the SXJ Alumni Association, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable urban mobility and the role of public spaces in city life.
World Car-Free Day, observed annually on September 22nd, is a global initiative that encourages people to leave their cars at home and opt for sustainable modes of transportation such as cycling, walking, and public transport. The day highlights the importance of reducing vehicle dependency to create cleaner air, safer streets, and healthier urban environments. By limiting car use, cities can significantly decrease air pollution, carbon emissions, and traffic congestion, leading to improved public health and better quality of life. This initiative also promotes active mobility and reclaims public spaces, transforming streets into vibrant areas for community engagement. Around the world, cities celebrate by closing roads to motorized traffic, hosting cycling rallies, awareness campaigns, and discussions on sustainable urban planning. In Nepal, where urban congestion and pollution are growing challenges, such efforts can play a vital role in shaping people-friendly and eco-conscious cities.
To support this movement, we invite you to join our pre-event cycling rally on September 21st, 2024, at 7:00 AM at St. Xavier’s School, Jawalakhel, where we will explore potential car-free zones and the current public spaces around Patan.
