Maitighar To Tinkuna Cycle Lane Field Visit Update
On March 1st, 2026, Nepal Cycle Society conducted a field visit together with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Engineer regarding the project “Footpath and Cycle Lane Maintenance and Construction Works from Maitighar to Tinkune Park.”
The cycle lane from Maitighar to Tinkune was originally constructed at the end of 2012. However, due to faulty design and poor implementation, the lane has never functioned effectively for cyclists. In 2019, Nepal Cycle Society carried out a research project titled “Review of Maitighar–Tinkune Cycle Lane to Operationalization” under the City Planning Commission of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Although the report was acknowledged, its recommendations were not meaningfully implemented.
During today’s visit, several critical concerns were observed:
- The newly constructed Falcha along the Maitighar–Tinkune corridor has created additional obstructions for both walking and cycling.
- The current bus stop arrangement requires reconsideration and relocation.
- The placement and design of the Falcha appear to lack inclusive planning for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Multiple physical barriers and design conflicts exist throughout the corridor, making the street unsafe and non-functional for active mobility users.
These issues highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive redesign of the entire street section, prioritizing safe, continuous, and accessible infrastructure for walking and cycling.
Nepal Cycle Society plans to hold another coordination meeting after the upcoming election to further advocate for practical solutions and ensure that walking and cycling receive the priority they deserve in Kathmandu’s urban streets.
Creating safe, functional, and inclusive streets remains our core commitment.
